American

White Horse Tavern - Originally constructed in 1652 as a private residence, The White Horse Tavern is considered the oldest tavern building in the country (operating as a tavern since 1673!). If you want to eat like George Washington…

Clarke Cooke House – A true Newport classic. Fun, lively, and right on Bannister’s Wharf. Great food and an even better vibe.

TSK (Thames Street Kitchen) – A Wheatland House personal favorite. A little further downstream, but worth the trip for the food and service. A bit more upscale—don’t miss the steak with bonito brown butter

Seafood

Black Pearl – THE chowder spot. Cozy inside on a rainy day or sit outside on the terrace when the sun’s out.

The Mooring - For over 25 years, The Mooring has provided some of Newport’s finest seafood. Their menu fuses unique and distinctive flavors with the freshest local ingredients from both land and sea. Enjoy panoramic views of Newport Harbor

Midtown Oyster Bar – A modern take on the traditional chowder house with a lively crowd and excellent food.

The Lobster Bar – Casual, laid-back, and perfect for a lobster roll with a water view

Mexican

Diego’s - Experience Newport’s historic waterfront while listening to punk rock and crushing delicious tacos & more made with love. A unique scene that's worth checking out.

La Vecina Taqueria - Chef Mariana Gonzalez-Trasvina sets the table with her family’s generational recipes and if that doesn’t sound yum! enough…don’t worry, the drinks are just as good.

Italian

Giusto - ‘Freestyle Italian’ is the authenticity of familiar ingredients, culture, and soul through the lens of local inspiration and, most importantly, fun.

Bar ‘Cino – Fun Italian with big bar and great energy. The thin-crust pizza is so light you could eat a whole pie!

Coffee/Casual/Breakfast

Cru – Order at the counter, grab a number, and enjoy. Simple but seriously delicious.

Hungry Monkey – A no-frills diner around the corner from Wheatland House. Great for breakfast or lunch. Open Early. Fast Service.

Corner Cafe - A Newport Breakfast and Lunch institution a 1 minute walk from Wheatland House.

Nitro Bar – Famous on TikTok, so it’s usually busy—but the coffee is top-notch. Just a short walk away.

Belle’s Café – Breakfast and lunch on the dock. Good food and great people-watching.

🍸 Bars

Forty 1 North – The spot for sunset cocktails. Glam, lively, and right among the yachts.

The Fastnet Pub – Chill, friendly, and our go-to local sports bar.

Pour Judgement - A no-frills local watering hole that offers down home cocktails and drafts.

The Landing – Live music plus a central marina location = classic Newport fun.

Market on Broadway - Small supermarket close to Wheatland House offering a wide variety of essentials and food options

Leo’s Market - Leos Market is Newport’s favorite Latin market. Specializing in Brazilian & Latin American products, Leo’s offers a unique spread of items as well everyday essentials

Christmas Tree Shop – Always an adventure.

Kiel James Patrick – Trendy, nautical, and very “New England prep.”

Royal Male – Old-school British style—Barbour jackets, tartans, and more.

Frazzleberries – Cute home décor and souvenirs with a nautical twist.

Pink Pineapple – Bright, fun boutique shopping.

⛵ Things to Do

Tour The Breakers – The grandest of the Newport mansions. Go early to beat the crowds. The audio tour is great but wandering around pretending you’re a Vanderbilt is just as fun.

Castle Hill Inn – Grab a drink on the lawn. Sunsets are famous, but the views are gorgeous anytime. Be ready to snag an Adirondack chair!

Get Out on the Water – Sailing is what Newport does best. Try the Schooner Madeleine for a classic sail, or the Coastal Queen for a relaxed cruise.

Gooseberry Beach Day – A beautiful little cove. Calm waters, snack bar, family-friendly. Bring cash for parking and food.

Audrain Auto Museum – Rotating exhibits of rare, beautiful cars. Always something cool on display.

International Tennis Hall of Fame – History, architecture, and tennis all in one. Worth it even if you don’t play.

Jamestown 9-Hole Golf Course - A quick drive across the bridge brings you to an amazing little golf course for all skill levels and budgets. Really fun!

📅 Itinerary Ideas

History & Culture Day – Start with coffee at Nitro, then head to The Breakers early. Grab lunch at Cru or La Forge at the Tennis Hall of Fame, then walk to the Audrain Museum.

Beach & Sunset Day – Get to Gooseberry Beach early for a spot. Lunch at the snack bar (the grilled cheese + strawberry lemonade is a must). On your way back, drive Ocean Avenue—it’s stunning. End the day with drinks at Castle Hill Inn.

Shopping & Strolling Day – Have breakfast at Belle’s Café, then wander Bannister’s Wharf for shopping. If you’re not into shops, check out Ryan Family Amusements. Finish with ice cream from Sprinkles.

Family Fun Day – Take the kids to the park behind the MLK Jr. Center, then fuel up at Hungry Monkey. In the afternoon, head to the marina for a boat trip (book in advance!).
